Language as a Medium of Creation
If you have ever spoken another language you probably have noticed that you are changed somewhat while speaking it; it speaks you, to some degree, as you speak it! One way to understand this is to think of a language as a medium rather than just a tool. Just as oil paint will make different demands of the painter then will water colors, and lead to paintings that only the oil medium can create, so too does each language define what you can say and, even, what you can imagine.
Language is the medium through which we know and construct ourselves and our reality. Language gives rise to a set of possibilities of consciousness and apprehension of the world. Consider Hindi, which has many more words for love than we do. What marvelous nuances of love does Hindi afford that simply lie outside the purview of English. In India, for example, husband and wife often call each other "Jann," which means "life" as a term of affection; what a wonderful shift in consciousness/reality such a naming of one's loved creates. When you enter a language you enter into the world it gives. While languages may have equivalencies between them, each is finally distinct and so is, in sometimes subtle and sometimes profound ways, the world it offers. But the difference between languages is not just a function of their grammars, vocabulary, or the cultural-historical conceptual frameworks carried within them.
The Mystical Aspect of an Alphabet
A given alphabet itself generates yet another level of difference. Certainly it is easy to recognize the visual and phonetic differences between, say, the English and Russian (modified Cyrillic) alphabets. But alphabets are more than just particular marks that denote a set of specific sounds. Letters house "keys" that are active in the construction of reality. Mystics from several tradition have understood this. As Pythagorus articulated the archetypal creative capacity of numbers, Kabbalists, within the Jewish tradition, have long contemplated and worked with the Hebrew alphabet. Considering the Hebrew alphabet as sacred, the very "Instrument" with which God created the world, Kabbalist have come to the letters as a means to pray, grow, and heal. Within the Hindu tradition, Sanskrit was understood to be magical, functioning in the calling into being of the universe and everything in it. Muslims consider the Qur'an to be a miracle, Allah speaks in (Pure) Arabic first; in this sense it is not even a language that can be translated into other languages.
Letters, then, in the mystical tradition are not arbitrary, empty marks. As a tool of the Divine, they are imbued with power and they are the voice of a deeper reality. Arab calligraphers considered their art to be "the geometry of the soul expressed through the body." (The Splendor of Islamic Calligraphy). Such a notion points to a whole other domain of existence. Calligraphers were attending to this other dimensionality: "each letter turned into an image, the physical act of creating a line which is animated and led onwards by an inner rhythm."(SIC) Finally, the letters/words become a resonant reality, "a metaphor that can be taken literally and concretely, with the literal design of it inspiring spirit." (SIC)
Myths of the origin of alphabets also direct us to the spiritual aspect of letters. While anthropologists trace Arabic back to Nabato-Aramaic and therefore back to the Phoenician alphabet, one myth as to the real origin of the Arabic alphabet tells the story this way:
"Letters arose from the light on the pen that inscribed the Grand Destiny on the Sacred Tablet. Allah had
ordained that there-in should be recorded the deeds of all creatures till the Last Judgement. After wandering
through the universe, the light became transformed into the letter alif, from which developed all others." (SIC)
Up until the advent of quantum physics, the materialist-rational positions viewed the idea of words and letters as having any power or extra dimensional function as superstitious nonsense. Lacking any way of understanding a mechanism for such dynamics inside the construct of Newtonian physics, "modern" mainstream scientists left off any investigation of such magical notions. But observations in quantum physics—electrons appearing out of nowhere, a particle being in two places at the same time, electrons traveling backward and forward in time—have led to a reconsideration, by at least a few rationalists, of the concepts inherent in the mystical point of view.
Quantum Physics: A Bridge Between Science and Mysticism
Coming after Einstein (and sharing his theories with him) David Bohm, one of the most distinguished theoretical physcists of his generation, theorized the existence of an implicate and explicate order: what we see in the visible or explicate world are "subtotalities" derived from a deeper implicate order of unbroken wholeness. Bohm conceives the universe as a flowing hologram, or holomovement, in which a total order is contained, in some implicit sense, in each region of space and time. The explicate order is "a projection from higher dimensional levels of reality, and the apparent stability and solidity of objects and entities composing it are generated and sustained by a ceaseless process of enfoldment and unfoldment, for subatomic particles are constantly dissolving into the implicate order and then recrystallizing." (Pratt)
In addition, the implicate order of quantum potential is itself organized and guided by a superquantum potential. This superimplicate order, according to Bohm, indeed may be filled by an infinite, hierarchial series of implicate orders, some of which form relatively closed loops and some of which do not, with higher implicate orders organizing lower ones and lower ones in turn influencing the higher (a notion that seems as least compatible with Rupert Sheldrake's morphogenetic fields).
Bohm ultimately collapses the material non-material duality believing that life and consciousness are enfolded deep in the generative order, present and affecting even "inanimate" matter such as electrons or plasma. He postulates a "protointelligence" in matter, which would give rise not to random evolutionary development, but to creatively, relatively integrated wholes from the implicate levels of reality. At this point Bohm's concepts bridge the scientific and mystical discourses, Bohm himself remarking that the implicate domain "could equally well be called Idealism, Spirit, Consciousness. The separation of the two—matter and spirit—is an abstraction. The ground is always one. "(M. Talbot, The Holographic Universe)
At least at the quantum level then, reality is ever and always responsive to us, to our consciousness, to our projects (and we to it, as we are of it). The primary medium of our consciousness is our language. Beyond even their denotations and conotations, our words, enlivened by our intention and emotions (energy-in-motion), interact with the many fertile fields of reality to shape our reality.
Metatones and the Implicate Order
What is the mechanism of this activity of language? I can only offer my own understanding, derived from my study and work with letters and words in the "informational" or archetypal fields.
Each word is made up of letters and letters house, what I call, "metatones." These are not the audible tones of the phoneme but, rather, metatones are bits of information that resonate with the archetypal fields of the implicate order. In addition to their semantical import, words, in their metatones, are a "code," or parts of a code, in and of themselves that conjure, calling forth through resonance with implicate order an explicate reality. Letters, words, commands, prayer speech acts, resound an archtypal field* which in turn resounds and in-forms us.
*(An archetype is a template that itself in its entirety is never made manifest; it offers rather the parameters of possible modes of being, encoding options of being as well as the developmental pathways and sequencing for that mode of being. The archetype of the hero, for example, templates a certain collection of qualities and behaviors in a person.)
Each letter of an alphabet contains groups of metatones. Each alphabet thereby offers a library of metatones that can be configured in any number of ways to form resonant code. A given word, as it combines letters in a specific order to form a word with a specific meaning, profiles certain metatones within each letter. Each word in this way creates a particular code that constellates specific information-instruction within the archetypal implicate order. This particular constellation of information when "sounded" by our declaration and (re-sounded or "held" in our intention) begins to instruct and organize reality. While certainly we may cry out, sing, and chant as a way to pray, even our inner most "silent" prayer is heard, as the substrate of reality is responsive to our every thought-word. Our words are "sounded" in our consciousness and our consciousness is a radiant body shining-sounding within the holomovement of multi-dimensional reality.
The addition of a new letter adds a set of metatones to an alphabet. Aspects of the implicit order not previously accessible may now be activated. This may include "new" (at least to the speakers of this alphabet-language) archetypal information which may allow access to different realms of reality and possibility and be functional there. These different realms in turn act on us as we "become ourselves" inside that domain. New faculties of consciousness and being may be activated, bringing with them heretofore inconceivable possibilities and pathways of action. A new letter, then, small as it is on the page, brings with it huge potential.
When I put this question to myself, the answer that came to me was simply and solidly "because it's time." By this I mean both that "the time is right" and it's time, that is to say time has brought this forth through me. To understand this you need to let go of your ordinary way of thinking about time as empty of content, a mere numeric counting of increments of duration. In this old definition, time has no domain of its own, but is bound up in the definition of space. At the turn of the 19th century Russian physicist V. I. Vernadsky posited another way of understanding time. Time has its own metrics, separate from space. Time is active, deep, and operational. Noted Russian astrophysicist N. A. Kozyrev (1908-1983) ran a series of experiments which observed the receipt of information from distant galaxies prior to the time it took the information to arrive via light as a physical medium. This outcome seems to support Vernadsky's concepts of time; Kozyrev himself writes, "Time accomplishes a relationship between all phenomena of nature and participates actively in them." ("Possibility of Experimental Properties of Time," unpublished paper, 1967, p 35) José Argüelles, in Time and the Technospere: The Law of Time in Human Affairs from which I have drawn much of my discussion of time, examines the implications of this research in conjunction with his own research into the Mayan precepts of reality and time, concluding that "Time is actually the governing principle of a higher self-existing consciousness that regulates the order of the universe, both in regard to its living and non-living matter." "Cosmic order," he writes, "is itself the expression of time as the medium of universal manifestation." Perhaps time understood in this manner is similar or the same as David Bohm's implicate order which unfolds through the holomovement of reality. Time, as residing in the implicate order, is outside space. Time as an aspect of the implicate order (or perhaps the implicate order itself) births forth different realities, different possibilities; indeed it evolves us. And so this answer "because it's time" to the question "Why now?" is not meant to be coy, but actually descriptive of my experience of articulating the 27th letter of the English alphabet as a function of some deep order, some intelligence field, or Law of Time, operative in me, putting before me a project which I, at a deep level of my being, saw fit to undertake. As to the "rightness" of its timing, I understand the attributes of the letter and those of the new words that include it to be useful in facilitating shifts in consciousness and functioning of human beings, shifts that would lead to, among other things, a greater capacity for us to order the world according to love; as such I consider the new letter to be one of the facilitators of the profound shift in consciousness that is currently underway (of which there is much written elsewhere; see Argüelles' Earth Ascending, Daniel Pinchbeck's 2012, the Return of Quetzcoatl, and many others).
During the spring of 1999 I began working on something that for some time I could not name. I had already been developing Radiance Pictograms—pictograms that resonated with the "information field" body, facilitating field re-educations and latent-faculty activations—a process that often involved moving into a particular state of consciousness, a journey as I would call it, working in the fields and then returning to compose the resonant pictogram. When I was working on a larger issue, the process might require several journeys and notes that held the resonant keys that I would refer to later in creating the final functioning Radiance Pictogram. During this time I knew I was working on a larger project as weeks were going by were I was going into a specific field, collecting "notes" but not rendering any pictogram. After a few months of this, and out of some frustration as this process is rather intense and psychically arduous, I put it to Spirit, "What am I doing?"
In one of the ways Spirit has brought me insight, an answer came. I was guided to open a particular book to a particular page, starting with a particular paragraph where I was to read, "in the beginning of the age of harmony the 27th letter of the English alphabet will appear." I looked up from the page and sat there in the presence of this answer. To one part of me, it was not news; another part, say my conscious psyche, said, "Ah, yes"; and last, my rational mind, said "I didn't know the English alpahbet needed a new letter." The idea was truly marvelous to me and moved like a circular wave moving out in all directions through me. After that I was at peace with the work of it, and now that my conscious mind could go to work on it, I began to get very excited by the ramifications and potentialities of bringing a new letter in. I admit to periods of wonder, of asking who am I to do such a thing? concluding "I am me to do such a thing." Finally, I was able to arrive at a mark which resonated with the field of the new letter, but which I knew would need to be formed into a letter, a letter that would fit within the resonant field of the English alphabet.
Although I've made art for years, I did not approach the task of forming the actual letter from an artistic stand point. Nor was the letter like one of my Radiance Pictograms, which while they have a balance and certain beauty to them, are finally tools, programs. This making of a letter was something else; neither art nor tool. Down through history no doubt letters have been arrived at from different approaches and points of assimilation. I am not an expert in these matters, and didn't attempt to become one in response to the task before me. I was instead a listening for what needed to be formed to get the job done. Years later I identified with what I read of the Islamic calligraphers who charged themselves with the task of rendering the spiritual within the material, thereby making the spiritual palpable, there on the page; over the course of another two or three weeks I completed the task.
Some Attributes of the New Letter
After I rendered the mark, I worked with it inside myself, drawing it over and over again, feeling it, getting acquainted with its metatones. Gradually, I began to understand another level of meaning/function, different from the import of a given metatone, that was carried in the design of the mark itself . This was pleasing to me as during the process of articulating the form of the letter, I had little cognitive understanding of why it had to be the way it had to be, only a deep feeling of it either being "right" or "wrong." (This is part of the arduous nature of this work as it is psychically trying when you are simply tracking this inner energy).
The first part of the letter starts up high, at the top of the letter space and moves down at a specific angle to touch the base line or "ground" and rises up at the same angle only inversed. This is a resonant movement standing for the Divine/Spiritual become incarnate in a specific space and time. The rising back up to a place a little bit higher than half way is emblematic of the Spiritual/Spirit as Human located in the human heart. The letter then extends straight out, parallel to the ground, a specific distance: the activity of offering love. Note that the line is not too short, nor too long; it must risk itself in offering, which requires some vulnerability and courage and extension of self, but it does not over reach, maintaining a space of choice for those who might receive the offering.
The new letter brings with it resonant metatones that will support the expression and manifestation of higher love on the planet (a 9 resonance). Speaking or drawing the new letter will begin to bring this about within you. Using the new words that incorporate the new letter literally activate the reality they name. I have provided resonant pictograms of the metatones as a way to allow you to access the range of "keys" within this letter—over time as the letter is used and appears in more words, more and more of the inherent gifts of the letter will come out, until then the resonant pictograms of the metatones will make these aspect available.
I understand this new letter and the words that are coming with it to support the activation of new levels of consciousness and function of humanity, helping to "bring on line" our latent capacity as Divine Agents of Divine Love. I have worked with the letter and words every day for some six years now and I notice both immediate shifts in my consciousness and function as well a deep sense of peace and joy possibility emerging within me as a result. I have shared the letter and words with family and friends as well as clients, and those who have worked with it offer similar positive reports. Finally, I find it interesting that children in particular seem to delight in the letter and the new words and have put them to good use. For myself, it is my heart's deep joy to bring this all forth and offer it here.*
